Occupant load and egress width
Occupant load is the number every egress rule hangs on. Compute it from the floor area and occupancy class, then see the minimum exit count and the aggregate width the code expects.
NBC 2020 Div. B Table 3.1.17.1 — business and personal services, 9.3 m² per person.
- Occupant load
- 100
- Min. exits
- 2
- Level egress
- 610 mm
- On stairs
- 920 mm
A load of 100 exceeds the 60-person single-exit ceiling (NBC 2020 Div. B, 3.4.2.1), so at least 2 independent exits are required, sized at 6.1 mm per person on the level and 9.2 mm per person where stairs serve (3.4.3.2).
